Hal Manogue is a long-time blogging buddy. We met in Nashville when I laid down the tracks for my audio book "Sightlines: A Family Love Story in Poetry and Music."

His new book"Living Behind the Beauty Shop" has been embraced by the Down syndrome community and homeless advocate groups. I'm happy to be part of getting the word out about Hal's latest wise and probing book.

In "Living Behind the Beauty Shop" a Middle Tennessee boy understands that the psyche is able to communicate with the self experiencing other dimensions. The boy, Mase Russell, is living with Down syndrome. He is considered disabled in our normal reality, but he is far more enabled and connected than we are to that stream of consciousness that flows through all of us.

Read on to discover how Mase is able to communicate with other aspects of the self while dreaming, and he accepts his dream experiences as real. He is even able to remember those experiences and express them in his own way.

And then, of course, buy Hal's book!

Janet

_______________

What The Hell Are You Trying To Say In That Book?
by Hal Manogue

Beliefs and perceptions play an important role in what we experience in this physical reality, but we're not taught to recognize these energy forms as creative expressions. They are capable of creating the reality we find ourselves experiencing, but we give credit to outside forces and situations.

I'm not here to change anyone's beliefs. I am here to share some of mine. They may be strange to some of you and others may feel a vibration in your psyche that resonates with my thoughts. The psyche of course is hard to define using our physical terms, but let's say it is that aspect of the self that experiences the whole picture of who we are.

The self is multidimensional. In some innate way we all believe that fact. Religions teach that, and science is confirming our multidimensionality using transformational psychology, quantum physics, and other new age metaphysical technologies. We are finally recognizing that we are more than what we have been told we are, and we are much more connected to each other than we realize. That connection is not only defined by the physical aspects of the human species; it is defined by the non-physical aspects of the self that communicate through vibrations and interactive consciousness units.

All physical things are qualities of consciousness, and they all experience a reality regardless of how foreign those realities appear to us.

Our consciousness senses its physical connection on several levels, but we tend to discount those levels because they don't conform to the limited beliefs that are formed by external as well as internal means. Different elements of consciousness become physical in order to expand the awareness of the stream of consciousness that connects all of us to all that is.

So, we all are a quality of consciousness that creates a physical reality in order to expand other aspects of the self and psyche. We are not aware of it, but the self is functioning in several dimensions simultaneously.

We divide our physical life into at least two realities each day: the wakeful state and the dream state. Each night or in some cases each day we fall asleep, and have experiences. Many other dimensions appear clearly when we dream. Those dimensions are not limited, but we try to compact them in our world of limited beliefs and perceptions so we usually get a distorted view of the dream. We forget that we not only participate in dreams we are actually the audience in dreams as well.

When we sleep we use psyche images and languages in pure form. When we wake up we try to squeeze our psyche's language into our physical language, but it usually doesn't work. The psyche uses the true language of our consciousness, but we don't consciously translate it into our physical language even though we have that ability.

The dreaming psyche is as awake as we are when we are wide awake. It is organizing and sending impulses. But the impulses that are received from these other aspects of the self are usually discounted and overlooked in some way, especially if they conflict with our core beliefs. Our focus is on other physical things, but at times we capture this aspect of the psyche in daydreams, hypnotic trances and, psyche flashes--which we call déjà vu.

Dream activity contains perspective alterations, different viewpoints, and chaotic events that feel real and are, but we discount them because our belief system tells us they are not real. In other words, in the waking state we deal with what we call normal reality. We only operate on one level when awake, even though there are many other levels of the psyche that have experiences we can appreciate when we are aware of them.

When we dream, we enter some of these other levels of reality. These are quite native to the psyche. At times we try to view them through our normal reality, and they may become the dreams we remember. Those dreams are then interpreted using the brain frequency that is familiar. We use just one frequency while we are awake, and we believe there is no other reality that the one we recognize. Only our beliefs about the psyche and the self limit our experiences in the waking reality.

In dreams we find ourselves communicating with the dead or we visit old houses that have been torn down or destroyed. We sense true freedom where time and space are at our disposal, and we can do what we want with them. We feel infinity with the connected portions of the self that are crafty, creative, and knowledgeable. We could easily put science and religion out of business when we begin to understand the greater reality of the psyche.

"Living Behind the Beauty Shop" tells the story of a Middle Tennessee boy who understands that greater reality where the psyche is able to communicate with the self that is experiencing other dimensions. The boy, Mase Russell, is living with Down Syndrome. He is considered disabled in our normal reality, but he is far more enabled and connected than we are to that stream of consciousness that flows through all of us.

He is able to communicate with other aspects of the self while dreaming, and he accepts his dream experiences as real. He is even able to remember those experiences and express them in his own way. His family begins to sense that his disability is a challenging gift not a sentence of suffering.

His family is like any other family. They experience the typical dramas that we all create in our waking reality. His grandfather, Warren Russell is a wealthy business man that lives on his family's 1000 acre farm in Leipers Fork, Tennessee. The farm was a land grant given to his triple great-grandfather after the American Revolution.

Warren and his wife Claire considered the farm their right of passage until they both experienced a near-death experience on a trip to Florida in their Cessna. After the accident Warren decides to donate 500 acres to a non-profit foundation he formed called Perception Farms. Perception Farms is a self-sufficient community off the grid that gives the homeless a fresh start.

His daughter Cindy realizes that she's gay after she marries her college sweetheart. She returns home from California and finds an ex-nun, who is now called Margie, at one of Perception Farm's fundraisers. Margie discovered her true sexuality when she was in the convent. They become partners and decide to have a child using the sperm of their friend Alan Sutton, a well-educated and athletic individual who works in the shoe business. Baby Mase is born with Down's Syndrome. "Living Behind the Beauty Shop," follows his life and the experiences of the family as he becomes an accomplished poet and artist.

Years later, Mase finds Mischa Eddington who is another Down Syndrome artist, in a local college art class, and they develop a close relationship. Together they watch members of the family experience the pains of getting older. They offer the family another perspective about that aging process. The family realizes that Mase and Mischa chose to be born with Down syndrome in order to help others see that there are no boundaries or limits in physical life unless we put them there through our beliefs and perceptions. They show us that other realities are just as real as our waking reality.

When we consider that consciousness does not have a beginning or an end in the non-physical world we can better understand that the people we call disabled are actually teachers who choose to experience life in extraordinary ways. They teach us that putting limits, judgments, and sterilized beliefs in action is the art of separating one aspect of the self from other elements of the psyche.

When that happens, we find ourselves living in the beauty shop of life, which is filled with exterior self serving nothingness. Mase and Mischa live behind the beauty shop of life and they try to share and explain that aspect of life through their thoughts and deeds. They appreciate life as they know it and the life that all of us believe is only available through death. They show us that all there is, in this physical world, is the now and eternal love surrounds it.

The ides that our sense of self, which we usually assume to be relatively stable and enduring, is actually constructed anew each moment out of a ceaseless flux of thoughts images and sensations may be an interesting concept when we read about it, but when seen directly in meditation it becomes undeniably clear, and by understanding egocentricity it can be life changing and helpful.

Roger Walsh M.D. Ph.D. wrote those thoughts in his essay Hidden Wisdom. The fact that the self changes like a rapidly blinking light is a hard concept to grasp when I use my physically educated senses to try to explain that reality. If I consider my ego to be the center and the norm for all my experiences, then I find that I’m totally unaware of other aspects of my self and consciousness. If I consider my center to be inner consciousness, then the idea of multiple selves begins to make sense. As a whole, within the universal whole, I am several wholes in one physical body.

For example, a letter in a word is a whole within a word which is a whole in a sentence and the sentence is whole within a paragraph and then paragraphs are wholes within a page and a page is a whole within a chapter and so on. Each element is a whole that makes a reality an experience. I use splinters and fragments of my self to experience different realities in order to widen my awareness.

Realities and imagination are synonymous; without one there wouldn’t be the other. I’m taught that imagination is not real, but if I think about it, all my realities originate in my imagination. My plans, desires and my creativity come from imagination. Civilizations spring from imagination and my belief system was created by imagination. I create my world and my unique realities and then I create how to live them. All modern equipment; cars, TVs, iPods, computers, homes, clothes, electricity use and scientific discoveries are rooted in imagination. The sciences deal in facts, which are initiated by curiosity, which is fueled by imagination. Music and musical instruments and all beautiful expressions are the work of imagination. I even imagine and create what I don’t see, which includes my own multi-dimensionality.

Each reality I experience widens my perspective, which is why I choose to manifest physically. Consciousness expands in different forms and in different densities and intensities. Imagination is a tool of expansion and it is used by all qualities of consciousness. I have the ability to focus on whatever aspect of consciousness that excites me and then imagine the reality I experience using several fragments of my own creations. By widening my belief system, I allow other thoughts stimulated by other selves to manifest, which change my experiences. I sense a deep rooted imagination creating realties for me to express and live. This well of creativity continues endlessly as I become aware of the choices and probabilities that can be experienced at any point in linear time. My stable of selves is constantly adding contrast, as well as variety, to each moment, so I become both physically and non-physically aware.

I am much more than what I perceive to be physical. I feel that I’m separate because one aspect of consciousness chooses to be. I’m not separated from my feelings, they’re a part of me, and they are also independent of me. I create all to experience using different intensities of consciousness to feel each moment. I create each day using a self filled with imagination and experience physical being. It doesn’t matter if I believe in multiply selves or the power of imagination, for they continue to manifest from another quality of my consciousness in my unawareness. I can just ride my wave of imagination to the beach of my dreams and then do it all over again using whatever self I choose and just call them me.

________________________________

THE ENERGY OF LIFE

The conventional self is composed mainly of a history consisting of selected memories, and beginning from the moment of parturition. According to convention, I am not simply what I’m doing now. I am also what I have done and my conventionally edited version of my past is made to seem almost the more real “me” than what I am at this moment. For what I am seems so fleeting and intangible, but what I was is fixed and final. It is the firm basis for predictions of what I will be in the future and so it comes about that I am more closely identified with what no longer exists than with what actually is.

Alan Watts the British philosopher wrote that interesting statement in his book The Way of Zen, published in 1957. If I ask my self who I am, I do start putting a mental image together of what I’ve done and where I’ve been. I am a composite of yesterday waiting for tomorrow and never seem to get yesterday out of the way in the present moment. I constantly live a historic dream of my own making and continually try to wake up, but I find my self falling deeper into a waking sleep, as linear time shows tracks of my past on my physical body of now. I identify with those tracks and in a way wear them as badges of achievement and perseverance. The self that exists in the now is stuffed in a body of distorted memories that create a future with similar distortions.

As Ken Wilber mentions in his book Spectrum of Consciousness, my ego seems to be happy today if I promise it a happy tomorrow. The good news seems to be in a bright future, not a bright present. I endure pain and misery waiting for that future, but I don’t enjoy it, because it doesn’t exist now. When it does arrive my ego will only be content if I offer it another bright future. I continue to create insanity in order to be sane. I spend so much time running towards the future that I identify with running and I run right past it in the present, so I never really know who I am or enjoy that self. I find my self not enjoying the present because it has no future and if it has no future then it is dead in my belief system.

Trying to get a handle on the present and living it without associations that form from past beliefs is an enormous challenge, but it is one that I can experience. When I start to examine who I am from not only a physical and linear perspective, but from a psychological and metaphysical perspective, I open the door of awareness a little more. I still have beliefs about the past and the future, but I begin to immerse my self in the present. When I use my imagination in the present I create thoughts that are expressed as energy in some way. By following those thoughts from pure energy to manifestations, I find hidden fragments of my own consciousness waiting to be accepted and released in some form. Life in the present is about action and expansion and the awareness of different realities, so I can experience them. I tend to fear them for I have no past experiences to associate them with, but when I allow them to show themselves, I sense the incredible amount of energy that I have in every moment and that is enlightenment.

By accepting a changeable past and a probable future, I learn to live in the now. Both the past and future are creations of the present, which in psychological time happen simultaneously. Like the bark on a tree my ego is the buffer for this camouflage reality. I keep it healthy by making it aware that I am like the roots of a tree that need the energy of life now, not in the future.

The last step in producing an audio book is to celebrate! That's what my Nashville Production team did with me at the Sportsman Bar and Grille this week. It looks like a theme park version of those grand old WPA (Works Progress Administration) lodges in the great parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite. The food was pretty good. Best of all, it was just across the street from the place I was staying.

Our surprise guest was Suzy Bogguss, one of the country-western stars in the music city firmanment As a veteran of so many albumns and singles, I'm sure she's been to launch parties full of sparkle over the years. This was was homey. Suzy and I sat together and got to know each other. We'd never met before. We also got caught up about family relationships and stories. She was born in Aledo, Illinois, with her birthdate just a day after mine in December 30. Her mother Barbara Bogguss is a marvelous musician and played with my father at a 1938 family reunion that Daddy still recalls as a highlight in his life. Suzy is married to songwriter Doug Crider. Their son Ben is soon to be one of those young Eagle Scouts, as my brother Gary was.

Scott Kidd, my sound engineer and project manager came with his wife Sareya. Yvonne Perry, is Sareya's mother. She had introduced me to Scott last year.

I'd never met Greg McNey before. He took care of all our licensing and copyrighting requirements. I'd known he was a consummate professional and learned here that he was also a consummate gentleman. Greg introduced us to his friend Laura Neutzling who is chief visionary at Four Eyes Media. Sounds like a wonderful job, no? They spoke afterward how nice it is to watch someone pursue a dream or desire and see it to completion and were glad to have been a part of that.

Earlier in the day Scott Kidd and I started working on our newest project of making video logs as part of our launch. Hal Manogue, who couldn't be with us that night met me earlier in the day at the Whole Foods Deli where we taped an audio interview. He read the introduction for "Sightlines" audio book.

After dinner we did more interviews as part of the video logs for the launch.

Sing along, now, everybody, all together:

"Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say"

That's the essence of the "Getting to Know You" blogging meme which Isabella Mori of Change Therapy has just tagged me to participate in.

Poinsetta, December-child's flower

DECEMBER

12 characteristics...one for each month of the year.

1. Loyal and generous. Honest and trustworthy. These would comprise a primary character cluster. On-lookers think me daft at times to the extent I go in holding to these values which my father has modeled strongly throughout my life.

2. Sexy. Some have thought me a sailor's dream in bed...but who knows? What kind of vessels were the beds: barques? Ships? Canoes? And, what kind of waters did they sail upon?

3. Patriotic. "I'm always true to you, darling in my fashion. I'm always true to you, darling in my way."

4. Active interactions I'm interactive. Connective.

5. Impatient and hasty. When I'm overly-filled, I dart, like a hummingbird.

6. Ambitious. I'm a visionary who champions her visions and brings them forth into the world..."As I expand my own offerings in the world..." I pray for balance and dedicate whatever merit may arise.

7. Influential in organizations. Yup. In my 20s founded Tswaragano Craft Center in Gabane, Botswana. Started community projects in Decatur, Illinois. In my 30s developed curicula for All Indianan Pueblo Council in New Mexico, edited a regional alternative energy newsletter for Solar America, Inc., served as vice president of programming for Training and Development, edited an in-house newsletter for a major computer company. I learned a heap about organizational development, especially in nonprofit organizations. I made good contributions.

8. Loves to socialize and fun to be with. Yes, but usually do better one to one or in small groups and with folks who already know me a little bit. My father and I both have strong loner tendencies, and at the same time, strong connective tendencies. I call it "autonomy with connection."

9. Loves praises, attention, and loves to be loved. Well, heck yes! My mother trained us to pass on compliments and that was one of her favorite hobbies. She's say, "Janet, I've got a compliment to pass on to you." And then her face would just glow!

10. Unpretentious. Sure. It's the country breeding, natch!

11. Hates restrictions Whoo girl! Don't you know it.

                               DON'T FENCE ME IN!
Words and music by Cole Porter© & Robert Fletcher,
©1942, from the film Hollywood Canteen:

            [C]Oh [G7]give me [C]land, lots of [Am]land
Under [C]starry skies a[Am]bove.
[C]Don't [F]Fence Me [G]In.
Let me [G]ride through the [G7]wide open
[G]Country that I [G7]love.
[G]Don't [G7]Fence Me [C]In.
Let me [C]be by myself in the evening [C7]breeze,
[F]Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood [Dm7]trees.
[C]Send me off for[C7]ever,
but I ask [F]you, [C7]please[F],
[C]Don't [G7]Fence Me [C]In.

12. Loves to joke and has a good sense of humor. You just have to be tuned to my brand of humor, but, like my father, I'm very playful and mischiveous.

LYRICS "GETTING TO KNOW YOU" from THE KING AND I

[ANNA]

[Spoken] It's a very ancient saying,
But a true and honest thought,
That if you become a teacher,
By your pupils you'll be taught.

[Singing] As a teacher I've been learning---
You'll forgive me if I boast---
And I've now become an expert,
On the subject I like most.

[Spoken] Getting to know you.

[Singing] Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.

Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of tea.

[ANNA AND THE MOTHERS]

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you like me.

Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,

[ANNA]

My cup of tea.

[ALL]

Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say

Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day.

Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say

Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day .. by ... day.

I sent an excerpt from WINDOW FRAME originally published in "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary" and dedicated to my mother Ruth Evelyn Johnston Thompson (January 4, 1916-May 1, 2006). It's a story poem that tells how my mother never lost her essence, even when she lost the full use of her mind...how her passion for watching birds just dove deeper into herself.

My pal Hal Manogue and other fine poets are also featured in the poetry corner.

In addition to the poetry corner (Yvonne's soulful side), you'll find:

    * Three Things Necessary to Make Writing Good and Powerful
* NIGHTENGALE NUGGETS: Soup-to-Nuts Publishing Service
* Walk ‘N Roll Dog Touches the Heart of Valentines
* WITS Podcast Schedule February 2008
* THE WRITER’S VOICE
* PUBLISHING WITH LULU.COM
* FEBRUARY BOOK REVIEWS
* Write What You Know...If You Dare
* Are You SMART? Making Progress with your Writing

Yvonne says, "Whether you are a published author or a writer-wanna-be you will find articles, announcements, book reviews, poetry, and information about the craft and business of writing, publishing and book marketing written by our readers in this newsletter. Our goal is to connect the writing and publishing community through networking that benefits both."

Yvonne is inclusive and skillful in her work. I've become a huge fan in the year I've known her over the net. Someday soon I hope to trek down to Nashville to meet Yvonne and Hal.

In 2006 I published my book "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary"with iUniverse. While my first-line audience was friends and family, I quickly found there were second-third-and-fourth-line audiences rippling out there who were interested in my book, my topic, and by extension, in me and what I thought and had to say. I marketed "Sightlines" by every means I knew how. I loved my book. Here, at the conference, you can read my essay "The Book Just Loved Me" on the Story Wall and pick up the sell sheet for "Sightlines" and my Woman of Letters card at the Heart to Heart taable.

You can learn more about "Sightlines: a Poet's Diary" on the sidebar of Riehlife...sample poems, talks at readings, the story behind the 25 archival photos of this downhome family love story beyond death told in accessible story poems. In 2007, "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary" won a DIY (Do It Yourself) award in the Hollywood Book Festival.

Onto the BACK OF THE ENVELOPE BOOK MARKETING PLAN which has three parts. 1) Inventory 2) Action 3) Perspective.

A. INVENTORY

Every choice you make in marketing your book witll flow from your answers to these questions in the inventory section.

1) Motivation. Why are you writing/or why did you write THIS book?

2) Audience. Who are you writing to? Who are you writing for?

3) Results. What do you want to get out of your marketing campaign? Sales? Platform? Social life? Friends? To feel like a real author? What results do you want to see? What do you want to happen? What benchmarks can you use to set up achievable goals and timebound, measurable results?

4) Resource Inventory. How much time, money, and support do you have to carry out your book marketing campaign? Who is there to help you? How much time and energy do you have to swap out for low-cost/no-cost resources?

5) Strength & Preference Inventory.

a) Do you like to speak? Teach?
b) Do you enjoy being on the Internet? Are you a technophobe? What's your learning quotient?

The best marketing strategy blends the introvert's and the extrovert's way. Blends public and private. Out in the world sometimes and in your own space at others.

B. ACTION PLAN

6) Research.
For speaking and teaching, find out what clubs and organizations in your area want to hear about and know more about your work and the topic related to your work. This is your niche.

On the Internet find out what websites and blogs are aligned with your interests and missions. Consider doing a blog book tour or other systematic internet promotion.

7) Marketing Materials/Platform
--Prepare a sell sheet, or sometimes called "one-sheet."

--Prepare a one-sentence quick description for your book that you can say when folks ask you about what you've written. This is sometimes called "the elevator speech" and sometimes called "the hook."

Mine came from a fan of "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary." Hal Manogue featured my book on his Short Sleeves website and called it "a downhome family love story beyond death" I picked up on this, thankfully, and added "told in accessible story poems and 25 archival photos."

--If you were running for president of your niche, what would be your election platform?

  Approach
Call, email, and write personal notes to people on your list you want to be aligned with. Enclose your sell sheet.

9) Action, action, action.

Put on your Nike's and just get out there and DO IT.

Speak, teach, talk about your book, give your book away to strangers on the plane.

C. PERSPECTIVE
Your book is a gift of love to the world.

For "Sightlines: A Poet's Diary" I resolved that I would do my best that my book remain a source of happiness in the world...for others and for myself. So, I leave you with that thought, that wish, that prayer.

May your book and all our books be a source of happiness to readers and the wider world. May we continue writing. May the books we write continue to be read. And, may there be life after book, after book, after book.

Resource Note: To help make that a reality, also read Daniel Barth's excellent article in the "Redwood Coast Review" titled "Staying Afloat: The Poor Devil Author in the 21st Century." Dan interviewed three authors in Northern California for this article, including myself. He'd seen me at the Poets and Writers sponsored talk "Story Poems: Of and For the Families of the World" (see sidebar for complete text). I used this article as a handout for my panel "Pen to Print" presentation. It contains excellent big picture perspective, a good spread of strategies and situations, and is packed full of specific information authors publishing and promoting their own books can use.

My six-column inches is on page 10, plus this pull quote:

“First you have to write the book, then you have to promote the book, but there’s another piece that really isn’t spoken about, and that is, after you write the book you have to understand what the devil you wrote."

Hope you check out this excellent piece of work by Dan Barth.
