Creating connections through the arts and across cultures

Janet Riehl Featured Reader at 10th Annual Poets & Writers Picnic in Mountainair, NM, on August 25th

Janet Riehl performs “Big Butts Are Beautiful” for Comedy on Tilt 3, 2006

Last summer Dale Harris attended my talk "Show Me the Way to Go Home" at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico and invited me to be a featured reader forthe 2007 Poets and Writers Picnic. I was only too happy to say "Yes!" (Click here to read my talk "Show Me the Way to Go Home.")

Puzzling over what I could perform that would keep folks awake in the heat, I asked Dale if I could do my "Big Butts Are Beautiful" piece that I did last summer for Comedy on Tilt 3 in Lake County, California, my old home. She said "yes" right back! (Click here and scroll down to read an essentialized version of the piece at the Lake County Arts Council website maintained by Xian Yeagan.)

This week, then, I travel to New Mexico, one of my favorite places in the world, to participate in two of my favorite activities in the world: learning more about writing and sharing my writing with others.

Thursday evening through noon on Saturday August 23-25.
Sunflower Poetry Writing Workshop is held at Shaffer Hotel, Mountainair. Come experience:
1) two days of writing poetry with Dr. Greg Candela, Dale Harris and Scott Sharot,
2) campfire poetry & storytelling,
3) exploring the picturesque small town of Mountainair
4) stay for the Poets & Writers Picnic on Saturday.

Tuition is only $100 with discounts for partial attendance and some scholarships available. Contact Dale Harris to enroll by calling 505-242-4930 or emailing I think the historic Shaffer Hotel is full. I'm staying at the newly re-modeled Rock Motel (call 505-847-2577 for reservations) and there is camping in the area.

On Saturday Aug. 25, from noon to 5 pm, come join the 10th Annual Poets & Writers Picnic, at the historic Shaffer Hotel, Mountainair, NM, sponsored by the Manzano Mountain Arts Council along with the town's Sunflower Festival. The picnic is held outdoors in the Shaffer's gazebo garden. In addition to the featured poets listed below there's an open mic. It's free! Just bring your picnic lunch.

Featured poets & writers line-up includes Greg Candela, Ken Gurney, Beatlicks Joe Speer & Pamela Hirst, Tony Mares, Outlaw poets John Macker & Todd Moore, Janet Grace Riehl, Cowgirl Bronc Magnet poet Connie Rossignol, Adam Rubenstein, Marilyn Stablein, Stewart S. Warren, and an ensemble group from the Rio Grande Valencia Poets: Shirley Blackwell, Rebecca Guile Hudson, Jim Smith, Kuan Tikkun, and K.K. (Kitty) Todorovich. Music by the Blue Rose Ramblers, Jessica Billey & Bud Melvin.

  1. Way to go, Janet! I wish I could be there. But, weddings in Arkansas and Sweden call me away. Enjoy the day. Keep them awake in the heat.
